Monsters on the Beach Event Date: May 7 2010 - May 9 2010 Location: On the boardwalk between 4th and 8th Streets Monsters on the Beach brings thrills and chills to the Virginia Beach oceanfront as Monster Trucks like Superman, Monster Mutt, and Grave Digger battle for ultimate sand domination! This family-targeted event is loud, fast, and exciting. A course is built right on the beach at 6th Street, with bleachers overlooking from the boardwalk. Sand dunes and junk cars combine to make the race course fast and fun for drivers and spectators alike. This is a ticketed event, with prices designed to fit the family budget. The "Monster Experience" is a VIP component that allows a limited number of guests to enter the track for a meet-and-greet with drivers. These patrons receive a Monsters on the Beach t-shirt and "race credentials," and sit in a special reserved section of bleachers located mid-course. The Monster Experience is a higher-priced ticket option that usually sells out weeks before the event. Local truck owners enter the Tough Truck Competition and the Truck Show and Shine. These events are designed to accommodate spectators who want to get in on the action! At the Tough Truck Competition, drivers tackle the same track used by the big monster trucks. Tough Truck races are held in-between the regular monster truck heats, with trophies and cash prizes awarded. At the Truck Show and Shine, locals enter their trucks to be judged and to win trophies and the honor of displaying their vehicles on the last day. Monster truck rides, offered for a nominal fee, are a big hit with the young and the young-at-heart! A smaller, less-threatening course is built on the beach at 4th Street, and rides are offered continually throughout the weekend, even at night! |
Stars & Stripes Explosion Event Date: Jul 4 2010 Location: 17th Street Park 24th Street Park 31st Street Park On the beach at 20th Street Multiple live performances on oceanfront stages attract tens of thousands of visitors and residents of Hampton Roads to a "star-spangled" salute to this great country of ours at Stars & Stripes Explosion! Musical acts offer something for everyone with tribute bands saluting some of the biggest names in music. From 8:00pm-9:30pm, a stage erected right on the beach at 20th Street becomes the focal point for performances by Symphonicity (the symphony orchestra of Virginia Beach) together with the Virginia Beach Chorale. This musical program encompasses patriotic songs, Broadway standards, movie themes, and folk music. The show segues into a spectacular fireworks show at 9:30pm that explodes over the ocean in a burst of colors and patterns! All concerts are free and open to the public. |
FunkFest Event Date: Aug 27 2010 - Aug 28 2010 Location: 24th Street Park A new spin on an existing festival, FunkFest celebrates the music generated over the years by such influential legends such as James Brown, Sly and the Family Stone, George Clinton, and The Ohio Players. Funk is an American musical style that originated in the mid-to late-1960's when African-American musicians blended soul music, soulful jazz, and R&B into a rhythmic, danceable new form of music. Funk brings a strong rhythmic groove of electric bass and drums to the foreground. Funk music was a major influence on the development of 1970's disco music, and has even impacted house music and hip-hop. FunkFest features bands in free concerts on the 24th Street Stage. Food, merchandise, and dance contests all contribute to a festive, "funky" vibe in the park! |
Verizon Wireless American Music Festival Event Date: Sep 3 2010 - Sep 5 2010 Location: 17th Street Park 24th Street Park 31st Street Park On the beach between 5th and 7th Streets The sounds of rock, jazz, country, blues, R&B, and more flood the Virginia Beach oceanfront for three sun-filled days over Labor Day Weekend at the Verizon Wireless American Music Festival. The largest outdoor music event on the East coast, the Verizon Wireless American Music Festival brings together local, regional, and national acts to play on a gigantic 60-foot wide and 60-foot tall stage on the beach at 5th Street as well as stages in all parks along the beautiful Virginia Beach oceanfront. Just about every musical genre is included, so there is truly "something for everyone!" Bands like 3 Doors Down, the B52's, Charlie Daniels Band, Kool & the Gang, Eddie Money, Journey, and many others have played the festival over the course of 15 thrilling years. Festival goers by the thousands love the appeal of being outdoors on the beach with the Atlantic Ocean providing the perfect background for some of the greatest live music of all time! Food vendors, beer, and merchandise kiosks enhance the festival atmosphere along the boardwalk. |
Atlantic Coast Kite Festival presented by The Oceanfront Inn Event Date: Apr 30 2010 - May 2 2010 Location: 17th Street Park On the beach between 16th and 18th Streets Courthouse Galleries in Portsmouth Portsmouth City Park A collaboration between the Courthouse Galleries in Portsmouth and the BeachEvents program, the Atlantic Coast Kite Festival is an exciting weekend of high-flying kites and fun for families, participants, and spectators of all ages! Kite fliers and spectators of all ages experience a visual feast at the Atlantic Coast Kite Festival! Held in two cities over the weekend, this popular event features a variety of activities appropriate for all ages and all levels of kite aficionados. Everyone is invited to take part in the "Best Kite Contest." To enter this contest, participants must build a kite and bring it to the festival. The contest consists of two parts: the actual kite itself and how well it is made, and the participant's ability to fly the kite. Participants must be able to fly their kites consecutively in the air for 5 minutes at a height of 100 feet. There are three competitive divisions: Master, Novice, and Youth (ages 7-14). Kites are photographed and entered into the "People's Choice" contest, where festival attendees get to vote in their favorite kites! Trophies are awarded for all divisions. Participants are encouraged to decorate their kites according to the announced theme. The Best Kite Contest is free to enter. |
Wild Wheels Weekend Spring Fling Event Date: Apr 16 2010 - Apr 18 2010 Location: On the boardwalk between 2nd and 31st Streets The ALL NEW Cruisin' Virginia Beach Wild Wheels Weekend Spring Fling turns the boardwalk into a local version of "Route 66" with cars and trucks from yesterday and today competing for trophies and cash prizes at this three-day event. Hot rods, street machines, classic cars, and trucks vie for prizes, and thousands of car enthusiasts and families thrill to 300 vehicles in a beautiful oceanfront setting. With a boardwalk parade and celebrities, this revved-up event is guaranteed to crank up both spectators and participants!Registration forms will be available in the near future. |
Treasures of the Earth Gem and Jewelry Show
This show consists of over 50 dealers who have a variety of quality 14K gold and sterling silver jewelry items including classic, estate, and contemporary jewelry, gem stones, mineral specimens, crystals, fossils, beads and findings, pearls and lapidary supplies. There will be jewelers and wire wrappers on site who can design and set stones and do remounts and repairs. In addition, there will be classic and hand crafted jewelry available for purchase. A registered gemologist will be on site for appraisals.
